Water changes

Even if the filter being used is state of the art, and the water remains crystal clear, water changes remain indispensable. Without water changes the nitrate level rises, causing undesirable problems such as algae. As a rule of thumb most aquarists change a third of the aquarium water every three weeks, but this can be altered to suit different aquaria and their owners. It is generally not a good idea to delay water changes over three weeks though, and it is always better to change less water, more frequently. Water changes are usually performed manually, and siphoning hoses are available for this purpose that also enable cleaning the substrate at the same time.
